I've had the pleasure this weekend of riding 3 group rides on 3 different platforms. I started Friday doing a group ride on Zwift. I am member of the HR Paceline group, and we do in the summer period 5 rides outside on our road bikes, one every month. But as you can guess this month is cancelled. So the idea was to do a virtual ride on Zwift. I created a new account to get a 7 day 7 trial so I could join. We did a 1 hour ride together, climbing the big mountain. What is Zwift popular at the moment…thousands…thousands of riders and people running together in the virtual world of Zwift. The graphics were nice, but it was so crowded that our group ride was hard to follow. After an hour of riding we stopped at the top of the mountain. What I do liked was that while riding you a sometimes choose to go left or right and change route…what is not good is the draft and the corners…
Then Saturday I created a group ride on Rouvy, to climb the Stelvio. 6 people joined me and we started of the beautiful climb. Real live HD 2K video and in this video the riders are graphically plotted. No drafting, no nothing, no chat box, just other riders to inspire you. The climb was heavy but beautiful and it took me 2 hours to finish it. I like riding real scenery’s and the AR option in Rouvy makes it even better.
And last but not least, on Sunday I joined my weekly group ride on RGT, the famous Lou’s group ride (Every Saturday and Sunday for me at the end fo the afternoon) on Borrego Springs. RGT is the ideal platform for group rides, because here drafting in a group is really superb and corners are like real live! Graphics are high density and beside your group, no one on the track, so not so crowded like Zwift. This group ride was with 30 riders and is always really fun.
So my conclusion : Zwift is to crowded for me and too much about all those little challenges you get in your screen. Rouvy is my favourite for riding on my own or in small groups doing all kind of famous climbs and roads around the world. RGT is for me the master for group rides (and races).
